A Serving of Yogurt a Day Keeps Type 2 Diabetes at Bay?

Recent research suggests that consuming just one serving a day of yogurt can lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 18 percent.

In a study published in BMC Medicine, investigators examined data from more than 41,400 men who participated in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and about 153,000 women who participated in either of two Nurses’ Health Studies. Participants answered a food-frequency questionnaire when they enrolled in the studies, as well as every four years after for up to 30 years, and they updated information on lifestyle practices and chronic diseases.

Consumption of yogurt (types or brands were not assessed)— but not other dairy products— was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes in all three groups, even after accounting for age, body mass index (BMI) and other lifestyle and dietary factors that may have impacted risk. To analyze data from a larger group, the researchers combined their results with findings from previous studies that looked at the connection between dairy foods and type 2 diabetes, and the outcome was similar. Why might yogurt have this effect? One theory is that its probiotic properties may improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation.

This observational study doesn’t prove that yogurt reduces type 2 diabetes risk—only a randomized controlled trial can do that—but it does suggest that yogurt may be more than just a good source of calcium.
